Boosting service provision in rural Wales
About the Case Study / Project
The Prince’s Countryside Fund is delighted to support Pub is the Hub’s expansion into Wales. In rural areas of Wales service availability has been associated with threats of closure or service withdrawal, and a consequent lack of rural services can in turn inflict further social costs on communities.
The project aims to identify opportunities to develop Pub is the Hub schemes where pubs provide essential services and facilities such as shops, post offices, older persons lunch clubs, community broadband hubs, prescription/parcel drop off and collection points or ‘one-stop shop’ citizens advice and information centres. These help communities, make pubs more sustainable and support local suppliers.
The project will train supportive licensees and local authorities to work together throughout Wales to develop these opportunities.
Other benefits of this already successful project throughout England, are the improved social cohesion for local people, especially the elderly, those on low incomes, young families and those without transport.
